As the Battle of the Atlantic began in earnest, the Royal Navy realized that only aircraft could defend the vital convoys from Germany's U-boats and Condors. However, fleet carriers were few, expensive, and needed elsewhere. The ingenious solution was to develop small, cheap aircraft carriers specifically for convoy duty. The first - 'MAC ships'-were based on fast merchant hulls, and later ones purpose-built, many in the US under Lend-Lease. They proved more useful than anyone expected. Britain's escort carriers launched raids against the Tirpitz in Norway, supported the great amphibious landings in the Pacific and Mediterranean, ferried aircraft into combat, and performed a host of other roles. This is the history of the warships that brought air power to the most remote parts of the oceans, launching Sea Hurricanes, Swordfish, Wildcats, Hellcats and Avengers off their small, treacherous flight decks in often ferocious weather, and played a major role in the Allies' ultimate victory.
