Here's a novel idea for your horse-themed birthday party: to calm your little cowboys after sugaring up with cake, read a story like the Bronco Busters by Alison Cragin Herzig. It's a good choice for a cowboy party and it will get your own little bronco buster in the party spirit. Horse crazy girls will like the book just as much as the boys. Every word makes you feel like you're out on the range next to the cool blue mountains, so get out your lariat and don't let this one get away.

A wonderful story, both hilarious and lyrical at the same time. Slim, Jim and Grimsley are three rough tough bronco busters who can't break the black pony. Only the little boy who talks to the horse, plays the harmonica for him and explains the mysteries of a saddle and a bridle can turn him into a friend. Great holiday present that subtly introduces the concept of peace not war, persuasion not coercion. Only picture book in a long time that both me and my husband loved as much as our children!
