In 1135 a group of monks from Savigny settled at Buildwas on the banks of the River Severn in Shropshire. The abbey was taken into the Cistercian community in 1147 and subsequently flourished, indicated by the construction of a new abbey church and other monastic buildings. It became one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in the country. This concise guide combines a tour of the remains of the site with a history of its foundation, development, suppression and conversion into a Tudor mansion and later a farm.
