Book Overview

They were not her children. But she would protect them with her life...

Corfu 1944. Though they don't know it, five-year-old Matilde and three-year-old Anna have kissed their mother for the last time. The Nazis have reached their sun-scorched home, and they are being taken to a place of safety, on the north-eastern tip of the rocky island, to be hidden at great risk by kindly Agata and her husband until the terrible war is over.

Matilde and Anna's tears are soothed by Agata's bedtime stories, but she is always alert. So far no soldiers have ventured down the steep rocky hillside to their secret haven, but Agata knows they are constantly scouring the island for missing Jews. And then, on a day when Agata's husband is away, a German soldier appears...

2016. Under a baking June sun, Amber and her husband arrive in Corfu from England, hoping for a fresh start. But not everyone is pleased by their arrival, and with the pressures of pregnancy, the couple grow further apart. Desperate to find a sense of belonging for herself and her unborn child, Amber finds herself drawn to the local story of two little girls, left by their parents and hidden for their own protection.

But there are some who would rather Amber left Corfu's terrible history well in the past. Can Amber uncover the heart-breaking truth about the two little girls, and what happened after a German soldier took a swim in the bay by their house? If she does, can the secrets of the past help her find happiness, or send her running from the island, alone?

A gripping, heart-wrenching and compelling read about the shadows at the heart of the sun-drenched island of Corfu and survival against all odds. Fans of Victoria Hislop, The Nightingale and The Tattooist of Auschwitz will fall in love with Burning Island.

'Two tragic stories, both equally well told. I couldn't put the book down. The book will keep you reading until the end. It is exciting and tragic at the same time. It will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next. This is one book you will not want to miss. I recommend it.' Goodreads Reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Historical Fiction during world war ll

I almost feel bad saying this..but this was a hard book for me to rate.I wanted to give it a 5 star, but something about it just didn't nudge me to that 5th star. I don't want to give the wrong impression, it was a Fabulous story, and I have read this Author's other novel " My Name is Eva" which was Absolutely Fabulous!!! And in saying that, I think that's what spoiled this story for me ! I Loved, Loved, Eva's story soooo much..that I think I was waiting, and comparing, this story to that one. Which in all fairness..isen't right, I know..but ..I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed . The story goes between the years of the war when the Germans invade a little Greek Island, where the small amount of Jewish inhabitants coexist with the Greeks, in a friendly, happy, respectful way. The story tells about one particular family who are forced to give up their two youngest children 3,5, yrs old, who they managed to hide from the list of names the Germans have. The Day comes that the Jewish people are rounded up to the center of town in an old broken stone fort, for a week, with no food, no water but a bucket here and there between a thousand of them, in the unbearable heat of summer. The Small babies in the meantime have been smuggled out, to live high in the mountains in a safe home of a Greek husband and wife who never had children of their own. The story will RIP your heart out, with the way all the Jewish people are handled, tortured, killed, thrown into the ocean over the cliffs, just because they are old, or small babies crying.. very very heartbreaking. The young children with the Greek couple are being cared for and loved by the couple who are hiding them..trying to reassure them.. that one day, their mommy and Daddy, and 13 yr old sister will all come back from working for the Germans, and will all be a happy Family again. This is the story they have chosen to tell these precious young babies..to keep them calm and happy. Now we go to 2006, and a young married couple who have left their very Stressful high paying jobs of London, to open a B&B on the same Islands... they have their share of unfortunate problems..which is to lengthy to give here, but intertwines with what happened to the two little girls, and how they were saved.I feel the story is very easy to follow..but tells us alot more of the young couples struggles and the other people around them..than of the two girls. You do find out what becomes of the young girls, but not such a hopeful ending for the young couple. This story is told in beautiful vivid details, of the island, the foods, the orchards, the weather, almost feels as if your there .In all it's a wonderful and different story, with many different characters lifes inter woven.
