My almost-2 year old identifies with Cailou - he always says No Too!

My son always says No. Most kids at this age first say no - even before they know what it is they are saying no to. But we always refer to this book when he says no all the time. e.g. "Cailou sometimes says no, when he really means yes" - makes my son smile and re-consider his "no". There are many other Cailou books out there, the next ones I'm going to read to him are: "Cailou - Mealtimes" and "Cailou - Potty Time".

I would say this book subtly encourages self-awareness. My 2 year old seemed to have an epiphany when we got to the line that says "sometimes Caillou says no when he really means yes." She looked so happy to hear that verbalized. She also liked the part about how Caillou doesn't like to be disturbed when he's playing. I think hearing these ideas in a story makes her realize that her feelings are normal and consequently she seems to have mellowed a bit from her frequent nay-saying.

My 23-month old daughter has asked to read this book over and over again. Basically, Caillou spends a lot of time in the book saying "no" to everything and being very whiny. It seems to have helped her let go of some of this behavior in herself. As with the other Caillou books, I do a fair amount of editing as I read, so that the story better reflects our own situation. I give it 5 stars based on her enjoyment of it, and on the extent to which it seems to have helped us deal with this issue in our own lives.
