In 1859, Cassie Bowen leaves her Philadelphia home actually owned by her brother to visit her elderly, eccentric, but wealthy Aunt Flora in Lyman's Gap. Flora's neighbor scoundrel Brent Conway, owner editor of the local newspaper, picks Cassie up at the train station and takes her to her aunt's house.Flora tells Cassie some strange things involving the ability to see the future through a crystal ball named Sebastian and a family curse. Each new generation produces a male and a female offspring. The male marries and produces the next generation pair of children while the female remains a spinster with Sebastian as a companion.When Flora dies, Cassie inherits everything.
