Johnson uses an active treatment approach that draws upon all major schools of psychotherapeutic thought, choosing techniques that serve specific purposes and outlining changes in behavioral, affective, and cognitive domains that are necessary for lasting characterological change. Focusing on character pathology resulting from disorders in attachment, the book discusses etiology, characteristic affects, behaviors and cognitions, bodily expressions of character, and therapeutic objectives and techniques
As a student of the Brennan School of Healing, I am interested in the energetic as well as the psychological/emotional components of healing. This book blends them better than any other book I've come across. He shows exercises, that I believe are derived from Bioenergetics, which aid the client in touching into their hidden pain. They are designed to be easy to perform yet productive in getting past the blocks. The only drawback is that this book only addresses the schizoid and oral characterologies in depth. I'm hoping he does another volume on the remaining characterologies.
A unique integration of psychotherapy approaches
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
As a graduate student in social work, I found this book enormously helpful in understanding how to integrate various psychotherapy approaches in professional practice. I checked this book out of the library so many times, I finally bought the book. His methods of how to facilitate personality growth in clients helped me understand myself in new and helpful ways. I feel I have grown tremendously from reading and digesting this book. Psychotherapy of the kind he writes about is truly a "hard work miracle"!
