kinda trippy, but nice

our family are huge fans of maurice and jack sendak, and this book is no exception, but unlike "the sign on rosie's door" and "the happy rain", this is not a book that the kids ask to read daily. it kinda freaked them out, in fact, when we first got it, and still has a kind of spooky mood to it, even though we know it's "safe" at this point, from having read it several times. it's about a girl who grows up in the circus who wants to understand what the audience members---normal people---are like. that's all fine and dandy, but the spooky part is how she imagines them and the nightmare she has about what they're like. as i said, it all comes out fine in the end (she realizes they're just like circus folk, not strange or creepy), just has a bit of an unsettling mood to it.
Brilliant and iconographic

This is an excellent book for children, both artistically and as a story. The story is about a little girl that is a member of a circus and her quest to discover what "average" people do in their everyday lives. The artwork reminds one of Piccasso's earlier drawings and has the iconographic quality that speaks to one's innermost thoughts. I suspect that there are many adults who would love this book as much as their child would.
