Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory is a "hybrid" between a core textbook and a primary source reader. This book builds on the authors′ Sociological Theory in the Classical Era and Sociological Theory in the Contemporary Era, to combine the major writings of sociology′s core classical and contemporary theorists with an historical and theoretical framework for understanding them. It provides not just a biographical and theoretical summary of each theorist/reading, but, in addition, an overarching scaffolding which students can use to examine, compare, and contrast each theorists′ major themes and concepts. No other theory text combines such "student-friendly" explanation and analysis with original theoretical works.
Great combo volume for senior undergrads and graduates studies

Edles and Appelrouth present students of Sociology with a pretty comprehensive selection of reading material by the usual classic sociology suspects (Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Gilman, Du Bois, Mead, ...) Most interesting -and novel at least to this reader- was "Part IV Broadening Sociological Theory" with texts by Judith Butler, Foucault, Baudrillard, Bourdieu, ...) For the few difficult words that I bumped into during my reading, I invested ONLY 10 CENTS in an old copy of the New Webster's dictionary and thesaurus of the English language... Best purchase -and return on my money! I have made in quite a while ! This book is "the long-awaited COMBINED text" from two previous books edited by Professor Edles and Appelrouth (also published by Pine Forge Press): Sociological Theory in the Classical Era: Text and Readings Sociological Theory in the Contemporary Era: Text and Readings All in all, it was worth spending another 60+ bucks (Ouch!) and in the process contributing a few extra royalty dollars to two hard-working academics. It is a solid 3 pounder of a book that, printed on acid-free paper (Ah! Ah! Ah!) I am keeping in my personal library as a reference to pass to my grand-children !
