From the bestselling author of Random Passage and Waiting for Time comes this masterful, engrossing story of the last surviving Beothuk, a World War II deserter and a recently widowed English woman at... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I picked up this book, by a new-to-me Canadian author, while in Ottawa, intrigued by its Newfoundland setting, and having been to the Museum of Civilization where I learned of Newfoundland's native people, the Beothuk. The writing is rich, the inner lives of the characters well-explored, the sense of place strong. The lives of a group of WW II Navy men,the last of the Beothuks, and an English anthropologist link, creating connections that pull on the characters' memories as well as the reader's. A worthwhile read by Bernice Morgan who, like so many Canadian authors--Atwood, Munro, MacDonald come to mind--continue to write rich, non-minimalist stories.
