An authoritative practitioner guide and student text, this book offers clear advice on how to structure and lead cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) groups and overcome common challenges that arise. Evidence-based group assessment and treatment protocols are provided for a range of frequently encountered disorders. Emphasizing that a CBT group is more than the sum of its individual members, the authors show how to understand and use group process to optimize outcomes. Up to date, accessible, and highly practical, the book is filled with session outlines, sample dialogues, checklists, troubleshooting tips, and other user-friendly features.
I am a masters student working on my LPC (Licenced Psychological Counselor). This book gave me a very good sense of how to use group therapy for CBT (Cognitive Behavioral therapy). I hope to use it extensively in my practice. Even if I never hold any of the specific groups talked about the wide variety of groups covered helped me conceptualize how to run some of the other groups I would like to. I listened to this book on my Kindle. I have not been able to do so for some of my text books because they were harder reads and didn't flow well. This book is well enough written a good match for the listening feature. My only complaint is that it uses some psychobabble specific to CBT. Some of these terms are absent in both my course work and personal experience with CBT (My therapist avoided psychobabble.) Even if you don't use it in therapy psychobabble can function as good communication short hand for discussing therapy. Unfortunately, this book wasn't thorough in defining these terms on their first use. If you are not already familure with CBT you will be lost.

I've been a psychiatric nurse in one of the top 10 private psychiatric hospitals in the country for more than 20 years. I found this book to be one of the best resources on CBT. It is a clear, concise yet comprehensive read.

It took just two days to read this gem of a book on the application of cognitive-behavioral and process group expertise to maximize outcomes of cognitive-behavioral group therapy. The authors not only present detailed updates on the CBT and process group literature, but also offer comprehensive outlines of previously tested protocols for group therapy of many common DSM-IV disorders. By offering a readable and comprehensive account of the relevant literature on group therapy and CBT, the authors also ignited a better understanding of further research needs.
