Alaska is a trip of a lifetime. Nowhere else can you kayak to glaciers; fly over the highest peak in North America; wonder at the Aurora Borealis; stay out all night celebrating the midnight sun; visit quirky towns; spot bears, eagles, moose, and whales; and learn the true meaning of the word remote all in the same trip.
The one Alaska guide to choose if you only choose one

If you look at my review of the Frommer's Alaska 2009, I noted that after reading both, Fodor's is by far the better of the two. It is much more comprehensive and complete, and beautifully illustrated with color photography. My particular interest was in the Alaska bush around the town of Bethel, since I have family there, and I noted that Frommer's kissed off this interesting native region as not being of much interest. One sentence. Fodor's spent several pages on the town and its surrounds, national parks, etc., with information on where to stay and eat, places of interest, guides and adventure trips though the surrounding tundra and wildlife areas, etc. This is the one guide to choose.

A very helpful travel companion. We took advantage of their suggestions and had a wonderful time. A useful tool in a place where one may be lost without it.
