I loved reading this book. It was never boring, and since I'm a teacher I took a personal interest in the protagonist, Rubin. He is such a likable charater, but his problems seem insurmountable. It is very interesting to see how he reacts to the good guys and the bad guys. Also I am from the Houston area; so I know about the setting of the book. This novel addresses big city issues in a very realistic and personal way.I didn't want to put it down until I found out if Rubin was all right. Would he get caught? Would he go to jail? Will he get killed? This book has a lot to say about our society, and it does it through the lives of some interesting characters. I felt like I lived in their neighborhood. I loved it!
Engaging book to the very end!

This was a great read. A tale involving a multi-dimensional Hispanic male, Ruben Lopez, and three very strong female characters that are in his life. One woman is white, one African American, and one Hispanic. I enjoyed this "multi-cultural" novel that wasn't trite PC. Excellent plot and character development and the ending was definitely a surprise!

Excellent novel! This book follows the life of a Mexican-American from Houston's barrio, namely "The Houston Ship Channel" It is a suspenseful success story that inspires belief in the American dream. Mr. Leon crafts the setting in brilliant detail and creates a story that cannot be "put down." I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading stories that motivate the imagination.
