(Choral Collection). Sweet Honey in the Rock's musical sound has been described in High Fidelity magazine as "breathtaking excursions into harmony singing" and in Down Beat as "neck-hair raising". This six-member African-American a cappella women's group has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. This wonderful collection compiled and edited by Ysaye M. Barnwell features three original compositions and one traditional song arrangement by each of the five singing members. The songs are presented in choral score for easy use by vocal ensembles. Also includes a moving foreword by Harry Belafonte, an introduction by Horace Clarence Boyer, the group's "Her-story," a discography with album covers, photos, and extensive composer's and performance notes. Available: SATB divisi a cappella. Also available: "Singing in the African-American Tradition" taught by Ysaye M. Barnwell with George Brandon.
Continuum receives high marks for the quality content. It contains 4 songs from each of Sweet Honey in the Rocks five most prolific songwriters. Many of the songs are favorites of mine, and it includes chants, freedom songs, and songs of worship from several of their albums. The book is written in a friendly, easy to use style. I could get together with several of my friends, or a whole choir, and have all the information I would need to perform their music. It also includes information about Sweet Honey's members, which helped me better understand where their music comes from. This book would be extremely helpful as a resource for anyone who works or dabbles in music and wants to promote Sweet Honey's message of love and justice.
