Jean Derwood is short, nearsighted, and afraid of everything;not exactly the best choice for a hero. Her older brother and sister,Jack and Penny, are always involved in exciting adventures, why can't she have one for a change?Jean's chances seem to be improving when she goes to visit her aunt and uncle in Alabama. If only she could stay for the summer. Maybe she could do something really brave, maybe she could prove that she isn't a coward. It is hard to do something brave if you can't even look a horse in the eye--with a fence between you. Jean prays for an adventure, afraid one will not come, and afraid one will. Could she ever really be courageous? What is courage anyway?
