The creative process begins with that most ordinary of items: a vinyl play doll, available anywhere. But when it's made over with a touch of color and other embellishments, it becomes a realistic-looking display piece--a work of art that often resembles a real baby and may even remind the creator of her own child, niece, nephew, or grandchild. The craft has become a hot new thing, and here's the secret of designing these "reborn dolls." It covers all the steps, from preparing the base doll to coloring, from adding eyes and hair to producing various types of cloth bodies and accessories from the included patterns. Inspiration comes from the numerous examples of finished dolls, created by both the author and other artists.
This book is terrifically useful for a brand-new doll reborner who genuinely has not the slightest idea of where to start. A great deal of this information is freely available on the internet, but having it in book form for ready reference in easy-to-read format is ideal. The layout is clear, the photos are helpful and appealling, and the examples of dolls made with Tucker's processes are pretty impressive given that she's explaining the easier, less-complicated methods. I was pleased with this purchase and have already recommended it to a few people who'd like to try this art without breaking the bank or frustrating themselves into giving up.
Reborning on the cheap

I think this is a good book for beginners who are looking to start reborning on the cheap. Some of the babies that are photographed in the back are lovely - the ones that the author did are rather ordinary. Since buying the book I have found much better information in doll magazines. Now that I have started reborning I would only give the book 3 stars - the patterns for the bodies help bring the book up.
