Death Valley Wildflowers, first published in 1962, is an introduction to the fascinating diversity of plants found in Death Valley National Park. Covered are more than 140 species of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees; descriptions explain each species' diagnostic features, habitats where found, and interesting animal uses or notes on the ecology of the plant, all presented in an easy-to-read, non-technical manner. Excellent line drawings by botanical illustrator Jeanne Janish accompany each description. Useful too is the arrangement of plants from those found at lowest elevations of the Park (valley floor and alluvial fans, upper desert slopes) to mid- and high-elevations (pinyon-juniper and limber-bristlecone pine woodlands. As the author states, the book includes the plants "that you will see because they are so common, or because they are so beautiful, or even some of those you will want to see because they are so interesting."
