I bought this sequel after reading halfway through Defy the Stars and it could not arrive fast enough. In my last review for Defy the Stars, I said that reading this book was an attempt at rekindling my love of reading, and it worked! I flew through Defy the Worlds in a couple of days: a feat I have not had the enthusiasm to do since high school.
In this adventure, we find out how Genesis fits into Earth’s (specifically Earth’s “elite”) plan to reach beyond human limits. Noemi is once again thrust into danger to follow her own “Directive One”—to protect her home, Genesis, and her beloved mech with a soul, Abel. They become entangled with the elite cyberneticist, father of Abel, Burt Mansfield, and his transhumanist daughter, Gillian Spearer, and many of earth’s elite as they journey to a new planet and a new world of cybernetics.
Anyways, I don’t want to give too much away! This series blew me away and I highly recommend it! It’s usually hard for me to enjoy science fiction (a degree in astrophysics will do that to you), but Claudia Gray is very good at giving enough detail to explain the space travel and the livability of the planets. The space travel is woven into the plot without distracting from the wonderful action and interactions between beautifully, thoughtfully written characters.
I just finished Defy the Worlds as I’m writing this review and will jump straight into Defy the Fates as soon as I’m done! See you all in the other side of the Gate!
