Diabetic Preparedness Pantry Planning Guide

This guide will help diabetics who don't have a preparedness plan for power outages or any emergency that disrupts food, water and medical supplies. Our power grid is totally dependent on computers. You should consider a power grid failure as the one most likely to occur. When this occurs, do you have a 10 day supply of diabetic friendly foods, water and medications. Do you know how to purify water when there isn't any power and you don't have a heating source. If you are insulin dependent, how are you going chill it with out power. I have first hand experience with one of the worst power outages in the U.S. In 1992 I was placement coordinator for Fl. Ederly Services in Dade. Co It was my luck to be on call the weekend Hurricane Andrew struck South Fl. It left 1.3 million residents without power, some for 6 months. Many were diabetics who did not have food, water or supplies. The stress alone caused sugar readings to spike for months. Five years ago my wife was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. We immediately began developing a preparedness plan, tailored to meet her new needs. When developing the plan I discovered that most preparedness guides and websites are informative but can be over whelming. Many recommend a years supply of foods, manual tools and even a bug out cottage in the woods. This might be a long term goal but not a starting point. A realistic starting point would be to store a 10-14 supply of food, water and medications. When selecting foods, you should choice items that are easy to prepare, can be stored for a period of time and meet your diabetic nutritional guidelines. Most importantly select foods that you enjoy eating. The cardinal rule of food storage is store what you eat and eat what you store. Diabetics know that if you don't regularly your blood sugar can plummet. You can locate most of the foods that meet these guidelines at your local grocery stores. There also is a wide variety of new choices available at emergency preparedness companies. My reviews some of these choices including freeze dried and dehydrated foods, mre's, protein bars and long term cooked meat products. You now can have tasty natural cooked bacon, that doesn't need refrigeration and has a 10 year shelf life. It is ready to eat any time. If your like my wife who likes her diabetic snacks, you can store freeze dried Neopolitan ice cream bars They don't need refrigeration and have a 2 year shelf life. Best of all they only have 11 grams carbs and 10 grams of sugar. The guide provides information about water preparedness planning and chilling insulin when power is lost. The rule of thumb for water storage is you should store 1 gal. per day per person. This gives you 1/2 gal for drinking and 1/2 for hygiene. Don't forget to store water and food for your pets. You can further ensure access to clean drinking water by having a water filtration method such as water purification packets or LifeStraw Personal Water Filter. This is a small tube straw that removes 99.9 % of bacteria and parasites. It can filter 264 gallons of water, enough to live on for a year. It doesn't have moving parts and doesn't need batteries If you are insulin dependent you can purchase a Frio Insulin Cooling Wallet. It keeps insulin cool and safe. It doesn't need refrigeration and is activated simply by adding water. It is compact and reusable. These are a few of the new preparedness products that you can utilize when developing your Diabetic Preparedness Pantry. My guide provides other preparedness planning tips and has a preparedness resource guide that will help with all aspects of preparedness planning.
