Discover the timeless beauty and profound meanings behind over two thousand Sanskrit names in The Sanskrit Dictionary of Names. Perfect for parents seeking a meaningful name for their child, or for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the rich heritage of Hindu deities, saints, and sages, this comprehensive dictionary goes beyond simple definitions. Each name is accompanied by scriptural quotes and sources, offering a glimpse into the divine attributes and sacred traditions that have shaped these names through the ages. As the oldest source of Indo-European speech, Sanskrit holds the key to understanding the spiritual and cultural foundations of countless traditions. This dictionary not only presents the names but also brings to life their significance with wisdom from primary texts, making it an invaluable resource for those seeking to connect with the divine essence within these ancient words.
When I ordered this book I imagined getting a little book maybe 100 pages long of basic Sanskrit names. I was amazed to find when this book arrived to find a massive anthology of names with their meanings, and in addition to that several pages linking many of these names to Hindu deities, moral concepts, and more! There are many names in this book that I had yet to find on online databases of names. The definitions of the names range from basic explanations of the name meaning like you’d find on any name list, to references to Hindu teachings and commentaries, to quotes directly from Hindu scriptures that detail the name’s deeper context. I recommend this book for any Hindu parents looking for spiritual names to give their children, those who have adopted Hinduism and want to change their name to match their beliefs, and anyone who is interested in learning about the beautiful Sanskrit-based names found in India!

This book is a good collection of Sanskrit names and their meanings from various contexts and commentaries. I don't think this is a complete collection of all the remarkable names that exist in this great language. Many of the missing names(?) that can't be found in this book are from Yoga itself. This is a good reference book and the authors did good job in compiling the names. I was disappointed to find that a book from Yoga Institute does not have complete resource of the names of Yoga itself in this book.
