The third edition of Paul Vogt's bestseller Dictionary of Statistics and Methodology will continue where the second edition left off...with updated terms and additions. The book aims to provide anyone interested in learning statistics with THE sourcebook of simple definitions and explanations of statistical and statistics-related concepts. In addition, the book provides brief biographies of more than 100 statisticians. The majority of terms offer additional references to use if more information is needed on a particular topic. Additionally, many terms are accompanied by graphical material to aid understanding.

Vogt's Dictionary doesn't cover every concept used or issue raised in contemporary social science, but it comes remarkably close. Odd as it may sound when referring to a dictionary, this book is actually fun to read. I learned a great deal, and, thanks to the clarity of Vogt's prose, did so painlessly. I suppose the best part is the reinforcement that comes from realizing how much one already knows. If you're a student, instructor, or on-the-job social scientist feeling a bit frustrated and maybe even burned out, pick up a copy of Vogt's Dictionary. Open it to any page and start reading. It's such a lift to realize that the social sciences really are loaded with interesting ideas, and to recognize that you already know how to think with some of them.
Phenomenal reference book

This is by far the most accessible, comprehensive, and useful stat. reference book I have ever seen. At thiswriting, I am a doctoral candidate in Communication andhave taken a variety of graduate level stat.courses fromthe Math Stat. department at WSU. I wish I had discovered this book earlier, as it would have been of immense help. I am truly impressed with the author's clarity, and the ease with which this text can be used by beginning and advanced students alike. My hat goes off to Professor Vogt.
Helpful for nonstatisticians who must use statistics

This book provides the reader with short definitions of statistical and research terms in easy-to-understand language. It removes some of the mystery. I work with graduate students who are writing research proposals and either theses or dissertations. While they have completed coursework in statistics, they are unfamiliar with many of the terms that are used in journal articles and research books. This book provides a link to help them understand what they are reading and allows them to write their papers with more authority. I have recommended this book to my students, and the professors at several universities with whom I work. These professors are now suggesting their students purchase this book during their coursework to help them with critiques and other assignments.
