I've read many books that are heavy on insight but provide little practical application. I've read many others brimming with practical suggestions on how to live life, but which contain precious few interesting ideas to give any real depth to the advice. Both are nice, but neither entirely satisfying. It is therefore delightful to read an essay that combines both as smoothly and inspiringly as Eaton's "Pahoran Principle" (in a chapter toward the middle of Digging Deeper). This chapter of Digging Deeper struck me particularly hard, but others are equally strong, with thoughts on individual Book of Mormon stories and verses presented in very readable and consistently thought provoking pieces. This is a great book for the scripture reader who wants to think "that's an interesting twist I hadn't thought of before," followed shortly by "that would really help me as I deal with _____." For me there were any number of vexing problems of my own that I inserted in the blank as I was reading, and I came away both inspired and motivated to move forward on them - and with new thoughts on how to do it.
