S. Broskoskeon October 6, 2018 Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase. DIRTY MINES is a story about coal mining in Pennsylvania. Excellent story that lets reader really experience coal mining. I thoroughly enjoyed this book As a resident of northeastern PA, whose grandfather worked as a coal miner, I have been trying to learn more about him, the work he did, and the coal industry. This book, while entertaining and a good read, really sheds light on how a child would enter the industry and move through various jobs until becoming a miner. The story is written in such a way that I feel like I spent time in and around a coal mine, experiencing the work, the environment, and the dangers. I not only learned, but I "felt" the experiences I read about. The author also put in perspective the importance of the coal industry, something that is being forgotten as time passes. This book is such a great story and told so well that it could be made into a movie. It should be required reading in high school or for college freshmen as it illuminates an important part of history.
