Discover Western Australia offers travellers and visitors a glimpse of the astonishing variety of attractions this vast state has to offer. From its tropical north to the cool temperate south, Western... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Western Australia is a huge state. Maybe if you are not from Australia, you might not fully appreciate this. But the book does a neat job of showing the sheer expanse and variety of WA. The state is twice the size of Alaska, and has barely 2 million people; over half of which are in Perth, the capital. What this means is that as you go outside Perth, it is really empty. Burt's photos and narrative offer some inkling of the stark and scenic desolation. From the Outback to the coastal regions. Look at the section on the south west, which is the well watered region. Here, you see small towns and a vast agricultural sector. While in the far north, there is the Pilbara. The photos show the red soil, so characteristic of the rich iron ore of that region. If most of the photos show few people, well that is actually how it is. The coverage of Perth and its port of Fremantle is quite minimal. But that's ok. You can find no shortage of brochures about Perth. It's the rest of WA that you should see.
