In this thesis, social, religious, and political propaganda within Dr. Seuss is be examined through both a close reading of the text and the life of Dr. Seuss (Ted Geisel) in order to determine whether or not the messages truly exist and if they are as obvious as they appear. Seuss did purposely include messages in several of his books. There is no question that "The Lorax" was meant to be an environmental warning, "The Butter Battle Book" included cold war escalation of weapons, and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is a treatise on the commercialization of Christmas. This thesis examines the three works listed above as well as "Green Eggs and Ham," "Yertle the Turtle," and "Horton Hears a Who."
