Book Overview

Proudly hailing from Compton, USA, sixteen-year-old Jayd Jackson is no stranger to drive-by shootings or run-ins with the friendly neighborhood crackhead. Street-smart, book-smart, and life-smart, she's nobody's fool-least of all KJ's, the most popular and cutest basketball jock at South Bay High, aka Drama High. Yes, it's a fact, Jayd fell hard for his player ways for a time, but now that KJ's shown his true colors-dumping Jayd because she refused to give up the cookies-she's through with him and his game playing for good.

Jayd just wants to start her Junior year of high school drama free. But wanting ain't getting, especially at a place like Drama High, a predominately white high school in a wealthy part of Los Angeles, where Jayd and 30 other Compton kids get bussed to daily. Saying race relations aren't what they should be would be putting it mildly, and that's just the beginning of the drama. Jayd's first day back to school, KJ's new girlfriend, Trecee, steps to her wanting to fight. Egged on by Misty, Jayd's former best friend-turned-nemesis, Trecee wants to make Jayd understand that KJ is off limits-even if she has to do it with her fists. With the fight set for Friday, and the sistah drama at an all time high, Jayd is about to learn who's really got her back and more importantly, when she's got to watch it. But at least she can always count on Mama, and her mystical bag of tricks.

Drama High is a remarkably assured debut, and L. Divine is a tantalizing and refreshing new voice. Jayd and her bold, honest, and laugh-out-loud funny assessment of life, along with her quirky cast of friends, classmates, loves, her magical family and eccentric neighbors make for an irresistible, can't-put-it-down read.

Ive been all over looking for this book because its the first one to start off the book series and im glab i found this app

Magically Enchanting

Now, here's a book that really tells what is goin on in High School!!! Honestly, if a boy gonna do you like that, kick him to the curb let him drool over all the other girls he wants 'cause he ain't worth it. But anyway the magical potions and stuff was a lil wierd but the story really got into what goes in in between the walls of any highschool!!!

Kept Attention

My 15 year old daughter who loves to read, read this book in one day. She said that it kept her attention and she did not want to put it down until she finished. She is begging me to purchase the others in the series, which I will. I love being able to provide her with books about african american teenagers, such as she, and I especially love it when she says the books met her expectations and was a good book.

It's On!

Sixteen-year old Compton native Jayd Jackson attends the predominately white South Bay High school. As with most high schools, the campus is crawling with cliques, catty girls and young guys with raging hormones. Jayd is anticipating a drama-free school year, but finds she is in the midst of the drama with her relationship with her boyfriend, KJ. She discovers he is seeing other girls because he is not pleased with her decision not to go all the way with him. As a result, she finds herself being an unwilling opponent in a fight. DRAMA HIGH: The Fight is L. Divine's first novel in the Drama High series. Filled with all the elements that make for a good book - young love, non-stop drama and a taste of the supernatural, it is sure to please. The author has a refreshing voice that young readers as well as adults can relate to. I read this book simultaneously with my teenage daughter, and although she said that is not the way teens talk, she enjoyed the book as much as I did. This novel comes highly recommended, and I look forward to the additional books in the series. Reviewed by Paula Henderson of The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

captivating look at teen life

In Compton, California South Bay High School basketball star Kalvince Alonzo Jenkins, Jr., KJ for short, tells his girlfriend Jayd Jackson that they are through as he is making it with someone else willing to go all the way with him. She is upset, but with her close friends Nellie and Mickey at her side, she moves on past the disappointment of her love life being shattered. After working all summer at Simply Wholesome, Jayd returns to school hoping this year will be quieter and not another sentence at "Drama High", where she knows being an outsider bussed in means the locals assume she will steal from them. However, her former best friend Misty still has in for her and persuades KJ's current squeeze Trecee into challenging Jayd to a cat fight. Though uninterested in a fight or KJ, as she has found student Jeremy more fascinating and kinder than her ex though he is white, Jayd knows she has no choice if she is to attend school with her head held high by defending her honor. This is a captivating look at teen life at a middle class predominately white high school in which the star of the tale, Jayd, is bussed in along with about thirty other black students. Her insight into the drama of surviving high school is terrific as rivalries are the norm. Readers will appreciate the first Drama High tale starring a strong support cast and a heroine who just wants a quiet school year and wonders if that is asking too much? Harriet Klausner

"...Entertaining and reflective of life as a teenager."

From rumors, misunderstandings, lies, break ups, crushes and fights." "Jayd Jackson is the typical teenager about to return to high school after summer break, amid some drama centered on her ex-boyfriend KJ. With the help of her friends, Nellie and Mickey she overcomes her disappointment with the break up and eventually becomes interested in Jeremy, another classmate at South Bay High." "News of an impending fight between Jayd and Tracee are surfacing around campus. Untruths and hidden agendas are exposed causing a fight which ends in suspension and expulsion." "L. Divine has tapped into an interesting genre for teen readers."
