In downsizing my bookcase, I have been re-reading romance books I have kept for many years. There are several exciting events in the story, romantic and suspenseful. Ladd does well with her relationship between the two main characters, Bethany and Luke. There were just two annoying factors. The servants spoke with their dialects, which were worded phonetically in the dialog making it difficult to read much less understand. Perhaps that was old style writing which I had seen in other novels of the past. Another problem was a secondary character that had tried to rape Bethany. He comes back into her life hoping he would forgive her, stating that he had missed his wife greatly when she died. I found that a lame reason for a man to take advantage of a young girl against her will. He does redeem himself in the end in a different way. Overall, it is worth the read if you like aloofness followed later with intense passion and tenderness from the hero. Those are my favorite reads. The heroine is likeable.
I thought it was great!
