One of a series of board books by this author that are ideal for teaching beginners Spanish or beginner ELLs English. In one lesson the dozen shortest of phrases can be learned and planning a performance for other classes or parents can begin. I have never taught it to a class that didn't fall in love with the lesson. I use all four of the books in the series for Spanish and English students.
It's only funny if you're one

I hated this book - but my kid loved it. He's 14 months, and he picked out of the library himself. This one and another just lik e it called "Dog is Thirsty". He laughed his little head off. I thought I would go crazy (he particularily liked when I quacked at the end, or panted during the dog story.) He sat still for 15 minutes , just reading and re-reading this with me. THEN he would pick it up and start reading and laughing on his own. I cannot beleive that he loved this book so much - I don't think it had 20 words in the whole thing! But he did love it - and that's the true test - so it gets 5 stars
Wonderful pictures, simple and enjoyable story...

As an adult I am a big fan of Kitamura'a work as his illustrations are fantastic - quirky and fun. The real test though is the response of my 20 month old son Ethan who loves the colourful pictures and has grasped the simple concept of the story at an early age.I was thrilled to see that Oprah has selected this book as a recommendation for 0-2 year olds and she could not have picked a better title. If you try this book on Oprah's recommendation then you will love the rest in this series which include Dog Is Thirsty (my favourite!) and Cat Is Sleepy.Kitamura also writes and illustates books for older children so your child can enjoy his work for some years to come.
Makes my one-year-old laugh every time

This is a great book for my one-year-old son. He absolutely loved it from the very first time we read it together. Unlike most books for this age group, it has a (simple) plot which he can enjoy, and he laughs every time at the climactic moment when the duck falls into the mud. He learned his first multisyllablic word (uh-oh) from this book. The story and drawings are very appealing and even I still like the book after reading it aloud dozens of times. It deserves to be one of the standard books for kids this age.
Funny!

I'm 26 years old and have to have a copy of this book, as well as Cat is Sleepy and Dog is Thirsty, everytime I need a good laugh. The illustrations are hilarious. I'm buying these for all my friends with babies and toddlers. I fear all their first words will be "uh-oh" (which is what duck says everytime he encounters a new inclement weather condition).
