I read Echoes of War when it was first published back in 1997, and five years on images and characters from this remarkable novel still haunt me. Basically this is a family saga set against the backdrop of WWII spanning the globe from Norfolk to Tuscany to Burma. But it is also great literature. Riviere's prose style always reminds me of Thomas Hardy and this book may well be as good as many of that writer's best works. Don't miss this book - it will not disappoint.
