This elementary algebra text presents explanations to promote conceptual understanding over the repeated application of algorithms. Understanding is stressed over computational skills and emphasis is placed on modelling, problem-solving, interpretation of graphs and the communication of mathematical ideas, under the auspices of the spiral approach. Discussion and mental exercise are included with the aim of encouraging students to forge their own links and connections.
If your child is having problems with algebra in high school this is the book for you. (Although the title says for college students it's basic enough for high school algebra.) I had the same problem when I was in high school - Crappy teacher + crappy book = failure. In college I finally had a good teacher who used Drooyan & Wooton. The authors present the material in a very understandable manner with sample problems showing the solution and then give you a set of several exercises. They never throw a curve at you without first explaining it and then presenting more exercises. All of the odd numbered exercises have answers in the back so you have immediate feedback on whether or not you are doing it correctly. This book got me off to a great start in College Algebra and made up for the problems I had in high school.
