Waste of time

Emerald Blaze takes place about 6 months after Sapphire Flames. Catalina has begun adjusting to her new life as Deputy Warden, PI, and Head of House Baylor. However, everything goes sideways at the end of a case when she's attacked by a pack of magical creatures she's never seen before. As result, she takes over a new case and quickly finds herself entrenched in murder, lies, and Alessandro. He's back working the case with her, and determined to make up for past mistakes. Emerald Blaze makes up for a lot of problems I had with Sapphire Flames. The romance feels much more like a proper partnership of trust and loving one another for who they are. Not who they idealized. Catalina has stepped up as Head of House Baylor and has learned a lot in the past six months. Her character continues to grow and struggle with how far to go to keep her family safe. It's nice to see her learn from her crush on Alessandro and grow as a woman. Alessandro was a welcome surprise. Most of the problems I had with him in Sapphire Flames have been addressed and he has grown as a character. I actually really liked him in this book. The plot and mystery are solid. Illona Andrews clearly put a lot of effort into it and it has paid off. The action is great and everything moves at a good pace. The quiet moments are just as nice and build the characters wonderfully. Overall, 3.5 star read for me.
