This is an unabridged, facsimile edition of the original published in 1934. From the author's Preface:In the following pages I have attempted to sketch briefly the part which this country has played in the history of slavery. As several notable works on this subject have recently appeared which are concerned mainly with the last hundred years, I have paid particular attention to the pre-Emancipation period. The book is largely based upon hitherto unpublished material and books and pamphlets of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries which are now rare, and I hope that in the growing literature of slavery there may be a place for a short general outline..
