While every family is unique and many interesting, family narratives will never be a well-read genre, but, nevertheless, they should be frequently written. Young people need a sense of belonging and an attachment to a family with its traditions and values. Without such attachments, people create their own histories and their own cultures that too often lead to conflict and despair. Society has been atomized by many factors. With both spouses working, family dinners have fallen by the wayside; social media connects people but does not engage them; political forces exploit differences rather than celebrate them. Our capacity for developing community has withered. There is a need to find ways to bring children into families and to bring generations of families together. Describing a family's heritage and history can play that role and help develop roots and bonds that create a sense of belonging and extol common virtues. Family narratives do this, and a healthy elderly population can write them. And they are fun to write!
