I'm taking taxation right now and this book is very helpful. It teaches you the fundamentals what you're eligible to deduct, what you can get credit for and much more. I even recommend this book for anyone who isn't taking a tax class. It's basically useful for everyone who pays taxes each year. If you have children, self-employed, making over $200,000 as a household or married but living separately, this book is good for you. Don't trust everything your tax preparer tells you, understand the facts before you file your taxes. This book is worth the price, HOWEVER, the 2009 edition is the same as the 2008 edition so if your instructor requires 2009, the 2008 is good enough because the problems are the same. If you're using this book for personal use or as a reference, a 2006 is plenty enough, or get whatever is cheapest. Even though the numbers vary year by year (you can always find the update online), the logic are the same.
