Culture and Ethnicity as an Aspect of Providing Psychotherapy

I am a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist. I believe that this book should be essential reading for anyone working in the mental health field, especially those involved in the direct delivery of services. This book is primarily about cultural and ethnic differences and how these differences affect mental health issues and the providing of mental health care. Different ethnic populations are discussed - - Asian/Pacific Americans, American Indians and Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans, Black Americans - - and how being a part of one of these particular ethnic cultures is relevant to individual or family therapy. All mental health providers should be familiar with the particular needs of the cultures they are working with. The book also goes into the theoretical framework for providing therapy to ethnic minority families along with the differences and similarities of therapy with ethnic minorities and mainstream Americans.
