In 1942, with war raging in Europe, the playwright 'Perry' Perry and his wife Babs tire of Dublin literary life and move to the small, quiet coastal town of Drane. Drane, however, is more than it... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Hugh Leonards book 'Fillums' is a wonderful story based around a small town called Drane, just south of Dublin. The story is set during world war two. Fillums is actually the way most Dubliners pronunce films as in movies, and the title is a reference to the movie theatre in the town and the way in which the locals live for the escape the movies give them in war time Ireland. There is all the classic characters you'd expect from the consumate author, German diplomats, secret affairs, a drunken doctor and your crazy parish priest to name but a few. The book is rich in its use of the true Dublin vocabulary and Hugh Leanord is probably the most polished novelist in Ireland that can craft all the these strange characters and create this masterful book. I recommend that whoever buys this book also purchase 'Home before night' and 'Out after dark'. If you like Irish movies then try and get a copy of 'DA'. with Martin Sheen, it is based upon 'Home before night', and is one of the best Irish movies ever made. Hugh does have a fleeting part in the movie as a pall bearer at the fathers funeral. Once you read a Hugh Leonard book, you will be smitten by his wordcraft. Billy Kavanagh Brush Prairie WA
