Book Overview

" Every offensive playbook gives you Xs and Os that look good on paper. Football's Best Offensive Playbook goes the extra yard, providing precisely illustrated plays that are proven point-producers in games. Many of football's greatest coaches--including Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, and Steve Spurrier--have contributed their expertise to the book. Each of the 100 plays comes with a clear, accurate diagram and coaching pointers that highlight key player positions and responsibilities. Many coaches list alternate formations, and most of the plays can be adapted to any offensive system. And since the book features contributions from coaches in the high school, college, and pro ranks, you'll find plays that work at all levels. Football's Best Offensive Playbook is an excellent resource for: - coaches looking to add to their playlists or develop new wrinkles for existing plays, - players attempting to better understand offensive strategy and play selection, and - students of the game trying to become more knowledgeable about what makes an offense click. The book features a balance of running and passing plays organized by formation. Part I, ""Running Plays,"" features 44 inside, off-tackle, and outside plays from coaches who have established their teams as perennial title contenders through the ground game. Greats like Bob Reade (whose teams once won 63 straight games) at Augustana College, Illinois, and John McKissick (the winningest high school coach in the country) of Summerville High School, South Carolina, contribute some of their most successful plays. Part II, ""Passing Plays,"" features 45 plays designed for modern controlled passing schemes, centered around precise timing and pinpoint accuracy. The plays are divided into play action and dropback passes. Contributing to this section are such notable passing architects as Dennis Erickson of perennial national championship contender University of Miami, Tom Coughlin of the NFL expansion Jacksonville Jaguars, and LaVell Edwards of Brigham Young, who has coached such great quarterbacks as Jim McMahon, Steve Young, and Ty Detmer. Part III, ""Special Plays,"" features 13 gadgets designed to burn cheating defenses. Included are 5 reverses, 3 throwback passes, 3 PATs, and 2 trick plays. A Play Finder index lists plays by type of run (power, speed, or deception), pass (yardage needed and drop-back or roll-out), and formation. The book also features a key to symbols used in the diagrams and a glossary of important terms. Strengthen your playlist with help from many of the game's most successful coaches. Outstanding Guide to Great Plays

Dee Hawkes does a great service to all coaches with this compilation of the best offensive plays in current use. He also provides a handy "play finder" section for quick reference.Plays are broken down by type (off-tackle, options, quick passes, etc.), and by formation (predominantly I formation, but with a healthy mix of single back/spread, Wing-T, veer and even wishbone). Hawkes also makes it easy to locate plays by each coach who submitted them. And what a group of coaches -- the greatest offensive minds in college and high school football for the last 20 years are represented here. Cross-referencing plays among coaches reveals insights into the differences a seemingly minor blocking variation can make in the success or failure of a play.Highly recommended.

Hey coach, you need this book!

This book is a great investment for any coach. It has diagrams of the most successful plays by the most successful coaches in the profession. Not only does the book diagram the plays, but it also provides in-depth information about each play. There are plays from almost all offensive formations, such as the I formation, Wing T, Split Backs, Wishbone, and Single Back. I would recomend this book to any football coach that is interested in expanding their offensive knowledge.

Awesome offensive playbook!

If you are looking for a comprehensive playbook this is it! It lists plays submitted from some of the best and well respected High School, College and Professional coaches in the nation. Not only does it diagram the X's and O's but also give detailed position by position responsibilities for each play against various defenses! Even if you don't implement these plays into your own offense, it is a fantastic reference book.

Accomplished its goal

This book shows just a few tidbits of genious in the coaching ranks of both high school and college football. Even if you have a concrete system of your own, this book will give you an idea about a few plays you may want to add to your arsenal.

An excellent look at offensive football plays.

I highly recommend this book for both offensive and defensive coaches. Dee Hawkes has persuaded many coaches of note to talk about the things they have always kept a closely guarded secret: the ins-and-outs of their favorite offensive plays. Detailed descriptions and diagrams accompany each play.Fans of the game will find this book interesting and educational as they seek to understand more about offensive play and techniques. At least an intermediary knowledge of football is suggested for non-coaches.
