Bollywood life, bhangra beats and balti food. The freezing heights of the Himalayas and the warmth of the Andaman Sea. Maharaja's palaces and tumbledown beach huts. Ganesh, gir lions and the Ganges.... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Make no mistake, this is a brick--nearly 1400 pages and a couple pounds. It would behoove you to cut out the sections for where you'll be traveling and just take those with you, or simply read it exhaustively and make notes before your trip. As far as guidebooks go, Footprint titles seem to be the best for a few reasons: 1) You'll rarely find yourself in the typical line of gawking tourists with noses glued to a lonely planet. You'll actually find interesting and informative reviews. 2) It is geared just a bit above the backpacker tourist--meaning, for the most part, that it's a bit classier, but by no means will you miss out on finding the cheap and interesting. 3) It is exhaustive, almost to a fault. I've never seen another guidebook series that is so in-depth and remarkably up-to-date as any of the Footprint line, especially for a place like India (I ended up living here for several years). Worth the price and then some.

My wife and I checked almost every India travel guide book that is sold in the USA. We took three travel guides with us to India but the footpring was the only one to return. Its descriptions aids the reader in visting a site. It guides you as a (semi) independent travel in exploring the sites and how to navigate through them. Other travel guides have similar descriptions of the sites, but they do not tell the travelar where to go. This works fine if you have a guide (but then why bother with a travel guide book), but is not helpful as an independent travelar. It also had great pre-prep suggestions on who to contact for booking your independent trip.
