I picked up this book along with another by the same author (Practice Makes Perfect - Complete French Grammar). Both are clear and very well-organized. French Demystified is comprehensive (grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, common pitfalls, etc.) but not overwhelming because the examples and exercises (oral and written) are to-the-point and never unnecessarily repetitious. I'm not a beginning student and I wasn't looking forward to reviewing grammar and other basics - but I was not a bit bored. I remembered what I used to know and then learned quite a bit more. Highly recommended.

Great for those learning on their own

While I can't imagine that a true beginner would get anything out of this book, it's terrific for the adult learner who has some knowledge of French. It is a very quick overview of French grammar, vocabulary, etc., which serves as a reminder of the forgotten or skipped over/never learned. One can use it to identify areas that need more work, turning to other resources such as Annie Heminway's excellent workbooks. The words and phrases are current and truly useful for communicating with French speakers. A guide to pronunciation alongside new vocabulary words would have made this even better.

My French used to be pretty good, but now is rusty. I've been using this book to review, and brush up, my French. It has great sections on verbs--tenses and the subjunctive--which have always been my weak points. But to my surprise, I'm also finding the other sections, on things I thought I knew, to be illuminating as well. For someone who already speaks French, this is an effortless and engaging way to get back up to speed!

A very useful self-teaching guide

I got this book for my students. I use it for every level: as a review for advanced students or as a teaching method to really DEMYSTIFY the French laguage. My students love it because it's practical, concise and it's filled with practice exercises.
