One of the most difficult tasks for a designer is to translate concepts into specific and detailed organizations of space. From Concept to Form in Landscape Design, Second Edition provides vital, functional techniques that make the transformation easier and more effective. This perceptive resource examines both traditional and nontraditional methods of landscape design, providing the conceptual and philosophical foundations for ideas and their visual expression.
The revised and expanded Second Edition includes: *
A new chapter dealing with the creative thought process for generating ideas *
Precise case studies showing sequential form evolution *
Hundreds of detailed photographs to assist in visualizing various techniques *
Inspiring images from nature for naturalistic form development *
Atypical design examples as impetus for innovation *
Accompanying web site with projects for classroom students and self-learners alike
From Concept to Form in Landscape Design, Second Edition presents the landscape transformation process in a highly visual manner, creating both a vivid learning experience for students and a useful toolbox for working designers. Replete with compelling, valuable, and accessible insights for designing outdoor spaces, Reid's book is an ideal blend of inspiration and application.
I have found this book extremely helpful as a basis/rough outline to help guide the development process in forming patterns/shapes of spaces from the concept planning stage; especially, if your normal design process is similar to the following (which Perry Howard, FASLA, has instructed me): Program Analysis, Site Analysis, Concept Plan, Illustrative Site Plan, Site Sections. A good tool to assist design professionals to concretize their ideas and design concepts

Architects, landscape architects, and urban planners are graphic thinkers. A simple graphic can communicate more design intent than many, many words. "From Concept to Form in Landscape Design" can help design professionals to concretize their ideas and design concepts into visible graphics and forms. Once you put your ideas on paper as specific forms, you can improve and fine-tune them. "From Concept to Form in Landscape Design" covers philosophical concepts, functional concepts, geometric form development, naturalistic form development, principles of design (basic elements of design, organizing principles, integration of forms), unconventional and provocative design, and various case studies. "From Concept to Form in Landscape Design" has 192 pages and many line drawings and interior black-and-white photos. It is a good tool to assist design professionals to concretize their ideas and design concepts. I found this book to be great for when you have designer's block. This book is filled to the rim with illustrated examples and makes a great quick reference. The best thing about it is it doesn't cost an arm and a leg like most design books.
Great book to learn how to integrate design elements

Very impressed with how the author demonstrates how you can take an element, whether it is a sea shell or fern frond, and how you can actually integrate it in a landscape design. Being a student in Landscape Architecture, I find it very useful in design projects.
