An adventure and a love story all rolled into one!

From the back of the book: Three years had passed since Philippa DeGraff's thrwarted attempt to stow away on the clipper ship Valkyrie, but memories of the rogue captain Burke Sinclaire still singed her heart. No longer a rebellious child, she set sail for California aboard his ship. This time she was wearing corsets and hoop skirts . . . and she was engaged to another man. Fortune seekers had raped Burke's beloved California for its gold and timber. Now Philippa planned to marry one. Burke should have despised her, but on the stormy passage her courage and fiery beauty unleashed a passion neither of them could control. This book caught you from the very beginning and hung on to the last page. Both characters are strong but vulnerable especially with each other. Burke has built a wall of ice around his heart for years but gradually the beautiful Philippa is breaking it down. Unfortunately she is engaged to someone else and he is taking her to him. The journey there is full of happiness and disappointments. There are lots of scenes on the ship where the descriptions are so vivid that you feel the wind in your hair and water sprayed on your face. Once they reach San Francisco you are carried on another journey through the northern woods of California viewing the beautiful Redwood trees and Indians villages and their way of life. I loved these two characters for their high ideals and their love of the land. It was a great adventure and a great love story!
