Through scientific research and his experience as a nutritional counselor, Eric Sternlicht discovered that anyone who is physically active-from marathoners to manual aborers-can benefit from the nutritional strategies used by professional athletes. This comprehensive, up-to-date guide to sports nutrition shows readers how to incorporate these strategies into their own customized, energy-boosting eating programs-and provides valuable information on: * eating the right foods, in the right amounts, at the right times * facts and fallacies about carbs, protein, fats, and more * sports drinks, supplements, and nutrition bars * sports nutrition for illness and injury * how to maximize weight loss * special concerns for women and mature athletes
This book is an excellent introduction to overall maximization of performance in all aspects (i.e. workouts, age group, training zone, etc). The main draw about this book, obviously as the title indicates, is the incredibly informative material about the correlations between diet and performance. While most of us know that "eating healthy" leads to a sense of well-being and a fulfilling/energetic day, this book breaks down the nuts and bolts of the basics of nutrition. Everything from macronutrients to sports supplements to micronutrients is covered in a fair amount of detail as they relate to performance. While the book presents advice to maximize performance from an athletic standpoint, it also takes into consideration that the average person reading this book does not have their own dietician and 8 hours a day to train...so it also offers some standard down to earth advice to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Keep in mind that the book is only so long and hence only contains moderately-introductory to moderately-detailed information about the topics described above...which means do NOT expect this to be the bible on sports nutrition.
