He was a legend of the Highlands, a masked rider no soldier could capture, her sworn enemy...her beloved. Rachel de Lacey, the clever daughter of Lord General de Lacey, was about to embark on her own... This description may be from another edition of this product.
If you've never read KC, start with The Raider, The Raider's Daughter and go down the line. They are really great and quite different from each other. When I started this book I wasn't sure I was going to like it. It's set in the post Culloden period and that's not my favorite era. But as you get into it, it grows on you. The characters are life like and likeable and their dedication to their cause is inspiring. One reviewer mentioned the lack of complexity in the development of the characters but I totally disagree. They had depth and multifaceted issues and longing. It was worth reading and now I'm on to the sequel about Gavin's brother Adam. (A cute twist the the hero's spectacles......which he often forgot or misplaced but then he forgot his gun once too!!) Cute dialogue.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the best romance books I have ever read!

This book is the best I have ever read. I absolutely love the characters, especially Gavin Carstares. I love his personality and how he loves the orphans and his brother.
Loved it!

Rarely do I fall in love with the hero within the first 50 pages but - Gavin! Wow!! Strong, gorgeous (with spectacles!), defender of children and human rights - what more could you want? And Rachel, who starts out like a hissing, spitting vixen, is transformed pretty quickly into a soft-hearted, likable heroine. The horrors of war were explicit but necessary to make Rachel see how the world really was. This book was magnificent - a definite keeper! I loved every second of it.

What a great book. I loved the tortured -- at first -- love story of Gavin and Rachel. This was my first KC book, but be assured I will read her others. This was my first Cates book, and it made me a total fan. The hero was not your typical alpha male. The heroine started out being a bit of a spoiled brat, but her true character came through. Plus, who can resist a man who's good with kids?
