The geologic story of Sun Valley begins several billion years ago. It includes covering of the area by a vast inland sea for several hundred million years, after which a period of extraordinary mountain building that enveloped the entire Rocky Mts. from Mexico to Canada. Widespread intrusion of molten granite into the bedrock followed a period of extensive volcanic activity that buried Idaho under thousands of feet of lava. Regional uplift of the Rocky Mts.about five million years ago and sculpting of the rocks by alpine glaciers during the great Ice Age resulted in the topography that we now see.
