George H. W. Bush came from a family with a tradition of public service. After serving as a navy pilot in World War II, he worked in the oil industry in Texas and became involved in politics. In 1966 he was elected to the House of Representatives and later served in other key positions. He became Ronald Reagan's vice president in 1980 and was elected president in 1988. In 1990 he led the United States and an international coalition into war against Iraq when Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait. Despite showing leadership abroad, Bush had less success with the country's economic problems, which led to his defeat in the 1992 election. Book jacket.
