For the first three days of July, 1863, in a Pennsylvania town called Gettysburg, the Union army under General George Meade clashed with Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces. By a stroke of luck, Union forces reached the town fast, and took up defensive positions at Culp's Hill, Cemetery Hill, Cemetery Ridge, Roundtop, and Roundtop. Confederate forces occupied Gettysburg, and Seminary Ridge.
