Girdles and Other Harnesses I have Known--by Joyce Harries--fits perfectly into that once-popular category: the book for dipping into last thing at night to help ensure a peaceful end to the day, and a good night's sleep. An anthology of short fiction, poetry, memoir and recipes, the book is as modest, warm, and gracious as its author. Joyce's devotion to her children, grandchildren and late husband is both touching and reassuring at a time when this kind of devotion is not taken for granted. I found the poems and short pieces enjoyable reading but, for me, Joyce is at her best when recalling not only her life with her husband, Hu, but her ways of coping with her loss after his sudden tragic death. Mentioning her difficulty in swallowing food which well-wishers offered during her time of grieving, Joyce says that she always remembers now to offer "soft food" to people who are crying-an insightful, thoughtful comment characteristic of the writing.
