A life-changing secret destroys an unlikely friendship in this "magnetic" psychological thriller from the Edgar Award-winning author of Dare Me (Meg Wolitzer). You told each other everything. Then she told you too much. Kit has risen to the top of her profession and is on the brink of achieving everything she wanted. She hasn't let anything stop her. But now someone else is standing in her way: Diane. Best friends at seventeen, their shared ambition made them inseparable. Until the day Diane told Kit her secret -- the worst thing she'd ever done, the worst thing Kit could imagine -- and it blew their friendship apart. Kit is still the only person who knows what Diane did. And now Diane knows something about Kit that could destroy everything she's worked so hard for. How far would Kit go to make the hard work, the sacrifice, worth it in the end? What wouldn't she give up? Diane thinks Kit is just like her. Maybe she's right. Ambition: it's in the blood . . . Shortlisted for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award
I didn't hate the book, but it seemed odd and forced. It wasn't thrilling or gripping. I wasn't on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened. Mostly I wanted to know why reading the book felt like reading someone's account of an acid trip or being inside the mind of a psychopath. I completely expected there to be some Fight Club, schizo thing going on up until the very end. It honestly would have been MUCH better that way.
If it's all from Kit's perspective, why is it so disjointed? It's all a bit weird and so are the characters. It's written as if Kit is drunk or drugged the entire time (or is a psycopath), which she is not. And the entire last chapter about graduation day is utterly worthless.
I started out with an "It's ok" rating and after writing this, I have to downgrade it to "I didn't like it"
Bottom line, not worth anyone's time.
Great book! Can’t put it down!

This book is really good. I’ve read Abbott’s ‘The Fever’, ‘The end of everything’ and ‘Dare me’ and I have to say this is her best book yet!
The ‘Then’ and ‘Now’ instead of Title chapters made it super easy to pick up what’s going on. The plot and twist is really good. Just as you thought the ending was satisfactory and justified, the story throws one last bombshell that’ll change the way you feel about the ‘bad guy’ in the story. It’s a sad ending and you’ll sympathize with the antagonist.
I recommend this book so much! Very good read! Very exciting and thrilling! Makes you want to know what’s going to happen next!
