This book provides valuable and concise insight into the modern development of China. The first half covers the development of China from the end of the dynasties and the evolution of the People's Republic. The first piece covers the development of Hong Kong as a British territory and traces its handover to China the implications for the people there. Ogden does an excellent job of looking at how immigration has affected Hong Kong and the ways in which that immigration plays out per events in China and East Asia/Pacific Rim. The next part focuses on Taiwan and the issues related to its possible unification with China. It traces the historical routes as being one china with two states and the economic development. Ogden does an excellent job of capturing the problems related to the environment and sustainability. The final part covers modern articles related to current issues facing all three of these territories. These focus on everything from politics to economics to social issues. Overall an excellent start for those who want to learn about modern China.
