This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. Offering a new look at the increasingly unfashionable institution of marriage, Geoffrey Bromiley presents here a timely theological study which, unlike others books on marriage, aims exclusively to relate marriage to God as Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit. Bromiley observes that God's work on reconciliation makes it possible for his people also to achieve reconciliation with one another, particularly in the marriage relationship. In addition to thoroughly discussing the relationship of the Trinity to marriage, Bromiley examines such topics as incest, adultery and fornication, celibacy, the permanency of marriage, and remarriage after the death of a partner.
I thought this little book was out of print. It is a pleasure to see it back because the books that have been written of late do not come close to the careful reasoning from the biblical texts that the author marshals throughout his readable presentation. Not wordy, innovative in approach, yet deeply theological in a meaningful and practical way. So many of the newer works on marriage and family are heavy laden with modern thinking and therapeutic wrangling. Where many have compromised with the "way it is and what everyone else is doing" approach, Bromiley sticks close to the biblical admonitions and instructions. His discussions about how our relationships should learn from the Trinity, and the "directions" of the Holy Spirit harbor the potential for married couples to transform their entire understanding of how they live their lives. This is a book that can be given to anyone getting married, someone who is even thinking about ever getting married, and those who have been married for any length of time. Pastors and counselors would do well to read this short volume carefully and develop a foundational approach to helping people to understand and enjoy the marital bond. Basic is good.
